Diode: Definition, Symbol, and Types of Diodes

Image
What is a Diode? A  diode  is defined as a two-terminal electronic component that only conducts current in one direction (so long as it is operated within a specified voltage level). An ideal diode will have zero resistance in one direction, and infinite resistance in the reverse direction.              Although in the real world, diodes can not achieve zero or infinite resistance. Instead, a diode will have negligible resistance in one direction (to allow current flow), and very high resistance in the reverse direction (to prevent current flow). A diode is effectively like a valve for an electrical circuit.             Semiconductor diodes are the most common type of diode. These diodes begin conducting electricity only if a certain threshold voltage is present in the forward direction (i.e. the “low resistance” direction). The diode is said to be “ forward biased ” when conducting cu...

PN Junction Diode and Characteristics of PN Junction Diode

Image
PN Junction Diode and Characteristics of PN Junction Diode                 PN junction diode is one of the fundamental elements in electronics. In this type of diode , we dope one side of a semiconductor piece with an acceptor impurity and another side with a donor impurity. A PN junction diode is a two-terminal electronics element, which can be classified as either ‘step graded’ or ‘linear graded’.                 In a step graded PN junction diode, the concentration of dopants both, in the N side and the P side are uniform up to the junction. But in a linearly graded junction, the doping concentration varies almost linearly with the distance from the junction. When we do not apply any voltage across the PN diode , free electrons will diffuse through the junction to P side and holes will diffuse through the junction to N side and they combine with each other.           ...

Zener diode: Definition, Symbol, and Types of Diodes

Image
What is Zener Diode? Working Principle of Zener Diode       Zener diode is basically like an ordinary PN junction diode but normally operated in reverse biased condition. But ordinary PN junction diode connected in reverse biased condition is not used as Zener diode practically. A Zener diode is a specially designed, highly doped PN junction diode. Working Principle of Zener Diode:       When a PN junction diode is reverse biased, the depletion layer becomes wider. If this reverse biased voltage across the diode is increased continually, the depletion layer becomes more and more wider. At the same time, there will be a constant reverse saturation current due to minority carriers.       After certain reverse voltage across the junction, the minority carriers get sufficient kinetic energy due to the strong electric field. Free electrons with sufficient kinetic energy collide with stationary ions of the depletion layer and knock out more free el...

(WiFi) Wireless Networking - Advantages and Disadvantages

Image
(WiFi) Wireless Networking - Advantages and Disadvantages                           The popularity of wireless LANs is a testament primarily to their convenience, cost efficiency, and ease of integration with other networks and network components. The majority of computers sold to consumers today come equipped with all necessary wireless LAN technology.                  Advantages of Wifi : Convenience                The wireless nature of such networks allow users to access network resources from nearly any convenient location within their primary networking environment (a home or office). With the increasing saturation of laptop-style computers, this is particularly relevant. Mobility           With the emergence of public wireless networks, users can access the internet even outside the...

WiFi Technology : Working Principles, Types and Applications

Image
What is WiFi Technology & How Does It Work?                      Wi-Fi is a popular wireless networking technology. Wi-Fi stands for “wireless fidelity”. Wi-Fi was invented by NCR Corporation/AT&T in the Netherlands in 1991. By using this technology we can exchange information between two or more devices.  Wi-Fi has been developed for mobile computing devices, such as laptops, but it is now extensively using for mobile applications and consumer electronics like televisions, DVD players, and digital cameras.  There should be two possibilities in communicating with the Wi-Fi connection that may be through an access point to the client connection or client to client connection. Wi-Fi is one type of  wireless technology .  It is commonly called a wireless   LAN   (local area network). WiFi technology allows local area networks to operate without cable and wiring. It is making a popular choice...

Light Emitting Diode

Image
L                             Light Emitting Diode                     Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, are widely used as a standard source of light in electrical equipment. It has a wide array of applications ranging from your mobile phone to large advertising billboards. They find applications in devices for showing what the time is and for displaying different types of data. In this post, the main focus would be on learning a lot about LEDs, such as its operations and functions. What is  light emitting diode:                    A light releasing diode is an electric component that emits light when the electric current flows through it. It is a light source based on semiconductors. When current passes through the LED, the electrons recombine with holes emitting light in the process. It is a specific type of...
